Dear Parents and Guardians,

The word “renaissance” means reawakening or rebirth, and it is accurate to state that Florin High School is in the midst of a renaissance. As I walk the campus this summer, I see our football team conditioning on our beautiful new synthetic turf field surrounded by an all-weather track. In addition, hard surfaces are being replaced with smooth and accessible paths, the rest of our original heating and air conditioning units are being replaced with new units, our flat roofs are being repaired, our bathrooms are being updated, and our classrooms will be receiving brand new student desks and chairs prior to the start of school.

In addition to construction and the physical changes on the campus, our programs are flourishing. Our EL students are reclassifying as fluent English speakers at an increasing rate; our Academies (AgTech, Information Technology, and LAW) and our Pathways (Audio Production, Automotive, Culinary Arts, and Engineering) provide Florin students with hands on experience that can lead to future career paths, introduce them to industry partners, and give them information about post-secondary educational options. Our ASSET after-school program ensures that our students receive support with tutoring, enrichment, or just a quiet spot to get homework done.

Florin’s Arts and Athletics programs are rapidly expanding and highlight our students’ talents. Our band and choir programs may be our largest and best ever, and there are so many students signing up for our Visual and Performing Arts classes that we were able to hire an additional art teacher this year. In addition, we have expanded the number of students participating in athletics, making us even more competitive as we enter the first year of the newly formed Greater Sacramento League vying against teams from Valley, Natomas, Cordova and Johnson.

Our goal is to be inclusive and to ensure that students know that they belong at Florin High School. Our Activities Director works with our ASB students to provide and promote an amazing variety of activities and opportunities to be involved in the school. Whether your student is entering or continuing at Florin High School, I ask you to make three commitments. First, commit to checking your student’s grades and attendance on Synergy at least once a week. We will help you sign up. Second, commit to supporting your student’s regular, on-time attendance to school and to all classes. Third, encourage your student to join a club or a sport or an academy or a pathway or a program – something that will attach your student to school.

Our commitments to you include providing an environment that promotes learning, regular communication, and working in partnership with our families. An example of that partnership is our Pathways program, which meets in the Library on the second Tuesday of each month and provides parents and students with valuable information about applying for and paying for college.

We hope to see you at our Pathways meetings, in the audience at arts and athletic events, and at Back-to-School Night and Open House. Florin High School’s partnership with parents and guardians establishes us as a community focused on ensuring our students’ success.
